Apple vs Facebook: Tim Cook speaks out on data

Tim Cook himself has decided to intervene publicly in the dispute between Apple and Facebook. The second criticizes the first concerning the advertising tracking which will be restricted in 2021 with iOS 14. The Apple executive sees the positive side for users.

On Twitter, Tim Cook talks about a user’s choice regarding their personal data:

We believe that users should be able to choose what data is collected about them and how it is used. Facebook can continue to track users across apps and sites as before. The transparency of app tracking in iOS 14 will just require them to ask for your permission first.

As Tim Cook points out, Apple is going to force Facebook and others to ask the user for permission. He will have to accept or refuse that the application follows its activities which take place on other applications or sites.

In the case of Facebook, the data enables targeted advertising. It is for this reason that the social network criticizes iOS 14. It knows in advance that the update will impact its income.

The social network published two advertisements in American newspapers to criticize Apple’s decision. The first advertisement dates from December 16. The second saw the light of day yesterday. In both cases, Facebook assures that Apple will hurt small businesses and push them to switch to a paid subscription.
