Apple Vision Pro: The Most Advanced VR Headset in the World – Is It Worth It?

Yet with the Vision Pro, Apple has an edge over the competition, especially in terms of mixed reality. Most headsets to date were developed to create the most realistic virtual reality experience possible, for example in games. Only later did developers also add augmented reality applications.

Apple, on the other hand, focuses heavily on both aspects with the Vision Pro. Tim Cook has always said that AR is more important to him than VR. After testing the Vision Pro, Vandeputte also understands why. “It is very pleasant that you maintain the connection with reality and that you are not completely cut off from the real world.”

Apple has also introduced some new gadgets. This allows users to create a “persona”: a digital copy of yourself that other Vision Pro users can see during video calls, for example.

The user’s eyes are also projected onto the outside of the glasses, so that they can always “maintain eye contact” with the people around them. “That feels a bit strange,” says Vandeputte. “When you create your virtual persona, your eyes are scanned and it’s those digital eyes that people see.” So there is no real eye contact.

Is the Vision Pro worth the money?

The difference with the competition also, and perhaps even mainly, lies in the technical specifications. Apple has chosen the best of the best in terms of both image and sound. And that also translates into the price. The Vision Pro has a price tag of $3,499 (about 3,250 euros). That is significantly more expensive than, for example, the Meta Quest 3, which you can buy for around 550 euros.

For the time being, the Vision Pro is only available in the United States. It is not yet known when it will also be for sale elsewhere. Apple will probably first focus on the Canadian market and the United Kingdom (end of 2024) and then the European mainland and Asia (early 2025).

Belgians who want to purchase the glasses will not only have to dig deep into their pockets, but will also have to travel to the US themselves or have glasses imported. The question is: is the Apple Vision Pro worth the effort and the money?

Undoubtedly for the real fans. Let there be no doubt: the Apple Vision Pro is the most advanced VR headset the world has ever seen. “The Meta Quest 3 is a good Volkswagen, the Vision Pro is a Ferrari,” Van Leugenhagen makes the comparison.
