Apple has made a significant decision regarding its upcoming iPad Pro models, as it has chosen different suppliers for the OLED displays of the 11-inch and 13-inch variants. The Elec reports that Samsung will exclusively produce the OLED panels for the 11-inch model, while LG will handle the production of the 13-inch panels. This move showcases Apple’s strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce reliance on a single supplier.
Samsung has secured its position as the sole supplier for the initial quantity of OLED displays for the 11-inch iPad Pro. This means that Samsung will be responsible for producing the first batch of displays for the next-generation iPad Pro launch. On the other hand, LG was initially scheduled to produce OLED panels for the 11-inch model as well, but the current situation indicates that each supplier is focused on manufacturing a specific type of OLED display. Both Samsung and LG commenced production last month.
Insiders in the industry suggest that this division of labor is a result of Apple’s changing demand outlook for OLED iPad Pro models. Additionally, both suppliers are still grappling with Apple’s requirements for new panel technologies, leading to unstable production capacity and yield. Apple is rumored to be aiming for “unrivaled” image quality and a design that reduces the thickness and weight of the iPad display.
The Korean-language report indicates that the situation may evolve after the production of the initial quantity, depending on fluctuations in production yield and potential adjustments to Apple’s demand forecast for the new OLED iPad Pro models. It is worth noting that Apple’s shipments forecast for this year has decreased to 8 million units, down from the previously projected 10 million units for 2024.
OLED displays are a new addition to the iPad lineup, as Apple has primarily utilized this technology for iPhones and Apple Watches. However, larger OLED screens are more expensive. Compared to LED or mini-LED, OLED offers deeper blacks and more vibrant colors. The introduction of OLED displays in the iPad Pro models could result in a significantly thinner design compared to the current LED versions. For instance, the larger 12.9-inch iPad Pro could be more than 1mm thinner.
In addition to the new displays, the iPad Pro models are expected to be powered by Apple’s latest M3 chip, which made its debut in the new MacBook Pro models last year. Built on 3-nanometer technology, the M3 chip is anticipated to bring notable graphics improvements over the current M2 chip used in the iPad Pro.
