In an unprecedented move in company history, Apple has decided to address disruptions by pausing development of next year’s software updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac and other devices.

According to sources speaking to Bloomberg, the delay, which was announced to employees within the company last week, is intended to help maintain quality control after the proliferation of errors in the first versions.

Sources said company engineers were tasked with fixing glitches and improving the software’s performance rather than adding new features.

Apple’s software, famous for its clean interfaces, easy-to-use controls, and focus on privacy, stands out as one of its biggest selling points.

This makes quality control mandatory. But the company has to strike a balance between the goal of adding new features and making sure operating systems run as smoothly as possible.

“Apple cares about quality, not new features”

According to Bloomberg, in recent years Apple has been paying more attention to quality, even if it means delaying it with new features. In 2018, Craig Federighi, number one in the software engineering department at Apple, postponed several unreleased iPhone features to the next year due to concerns that the software was too buggy. In 2019, it tried to prevent problems by overhauling Apple’s software development method.

Under this approach, each feature must be manually enabled through a process called “feature flags,” allowing employee testers to isolate the impact the feature will have on the overall system before adding it.

That year, Apple also adopted the approach known internally as “Pact.” This agreement requires employees to never knowingly allow “regressions”—where once-working software stops working correctly—and to quickly fix bugs.

“Too many glitches detected”

According to Bloomberg, the software engineering management team found many glitches while reviewing new operating systems that will be released next year.

So the division took the unusual step of halting all new feature development for a week to work on fixing the bugs.

The company completed the first version of its next iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems last month. This version is called M1.

Apple postponed the work known as M2. The delay also applies to the next Apple Watch operating system, watchOS 11, dubbed “Moonstone,” and the current iOS 17 update, called iOS 17.4.

This software, used by iPhone and iPad, is expected to be released around next March.
