JAKARTA – Apple can finally bring an always-on display to the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. According to a report from Mark Gurman of BloombergApple could introduce the feature with iOS 16, which allows the iPhone to display a limited amount of information even when it’s locked.
Gurman says the iPhone’s version of always-on mode can work in the same way as the Apple Watch Series 5 and up – the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will lower the lock screen frame rate with always-on mode enabled, and let them save energy while the screen remains on. .
It’s unclear whether the new iPhones will sport the same low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) display that Apple uses in its newer Watch models. This low-power display plays a big role in making always-on mode work properly, as it’s made to keep the device from consuming too much power.
For these features, Apple is actually far behind Samsung or other Android devices. Last year, analysts predicted that the iPhone 13 would come with an LTPO display to enable the always-on display.
A number of Android devices already support always-on mode and have been around for years. On certain Samsung devices, for example, the always-on display can show the time, battery level, widgets, and more, all while the phone remains locked.

Gurman expects iOS 16 to come with similar functionality, including wallpapers with “widget-like capabilities.” The always-on display isn’t the only feature that’s said to be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, as previous leaks suggested that Apple could only include the new A16 chip with the two premium devices.
Apple will announce a number of other changes in Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) which is drawing near on June 6. In line with previous predictions, Gurman believes that Apple can introduce features windowing and multitasking improved on the iPad.
He cited findings from developer Steve Troughton-Smith, who recently discovered that Apple may be working on a feature that lets users freely resize windows.
Apple could also overhaul some of its apps, in addition to adding new audio features to Messages, Gurman predicts Apple will change the menu System Preferences to make it more like the Settings app on iOS.
