Apple comes with fix for gray App Tracking Transparency switch

With the arrival of iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5, Apple added the App Tracking Transparency switch. That switch basically allows users to prevent apps from collecting their personal information. However, the app tracking switch remained gray for some users. Apple now seems to have a solution for that.

Starting with iOS 14.5, apps must ask for user permission before they can track your activity on other apps and websites. This kind of user information is used for better ad targeting and more. iPhone and iPad users have the option to turn the feature on or off by going to Settings → Privacy → Tracking to go. There You can allow or disallow tracking requests from apps. The function is disabled by default. This means that apps can basically follow you, until you turn it off yourself.

For some users, the app tracking switch is greyed out. That means all apps that ask for permission to track your activity will be denied by default. This, in turn, means that apps cannot access the device’s IDFA. Since those apps cannot use other data such as email addresses, these apps cannot track you, but other – more desirable – functionalities can also be compromised. Apple points out that there are indeed certain situations where the app tracking toggle is grayed out.
