On Christmas Eve, a wrong-way driver coming from Karlsruhe collided on the north lane between the Appenweier and Achern junctions at km 682 shortly before 9:00 p.m. with his car and a tractor-trailer that was properly traveling in the direction of Karlsruhe.
The driver of the car was killed in the accident; the truck driver was able to save himself from the overturned vehicle and had to be admitted to a clinic with minor injuries. After the accident, the truck caught fire.
The autobahn between the Appenweier and Achern junctions is currently closed in both directions; the traffic is diverted.
The accident recording will take several hours. The property damage incurred is in the six-figure range.
