Apocalyptic Civil War Poster Revealed: A New Look at Alex Garland’s Blockbuster

As we begin to overflow with impatience to discover the Civil War by Alex Garland, a new poster has just been revealed… and it’s awesome.

Alex Garland impressed us with the second warrior trailer for Civil Warwhich showed us the United States completely divided. It is a leap forward in the filmography of the filmmaker, who will for the first time direct a film with a blockbuster feel. Men was particularly great and Annihilation disconcerting enough to stay ahead, but this new feature film promises a move into the ranks of the “big guys” (directors with bigger budgets, but not necessarily better).

The director has brought together some very good people to set the United States ablaze: Kirsten Dunst shares the poster with Wagner Moura (Narcos), Jesse Plemons (absolutely terrifying in the first trailer for Civil War) and the brilliant Cailee Spaeny, who was perfect in Priscilla. IMAX and A24 have unveiled a new poster for the film which promises to be a shock, and we are overflowing with even more impatience.

A very subtle reference

civil war: the Apocalypse in New York

That’s poster art. We will note the fully assumed reference to Apocalypse Now : the little sentence at the top is in the same place, the helicopters pass in front of a glowing sun… Alex Garland has no intention of joking with his Civil War. However, there is a major change here: the war is no longer thousands of kilometers away, but on American territory. Even more, the war shakes up New York and armed helicopters fly over a Statue of Liberty, a tiny symbol of a democracy in the grip of a political and social nightmare which should call into question its fundamental principles.

Even if he has already said several times that his film aimed to denounce certain practices in the United States, seeing such visuals before its release is therefore even more worrying (and enticing). This is also a first for A24, which produces a film with a budget of more than 50 million dollars (and even 75 million according to World of Reel).

One of Hollywood’s most iconic posters

Before the release of the adaptation of Death Stranding – which could well explode this budget, given the scale of Hideo Kojima’s work – this is a record for the production company. And it is also one of the rare films to benefit from an IMAX release: recently, only Everything Everywhere All At Once et Beau is Afraid were released in this format. The subject of the film and the different glimpses in the trailer of Civil War make this choice quite understandable, and the way will be more or less clear after the sandstorm Dune 2.

Communication around this Civil War is definitely very well managed. Enough to make us even more want to discover Alex Garland’s film with Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny, which is coming in our French cinemas on April 17, 2024.
