In an apartment complex in Apeldoorn, 124 brand new heat pumps are switched off because there is no more room on the power grid. Grid operator Alliander expects to change this in the first quarter of 2025, writes Omroep Gelderland. The fact that this cannot be done sooner is partly due to a shortage of materials and personnel.

Residents of the elderly homes now have a heat pump in the storage room, but their homes will still be heated with a gas boiler next year. While the intention was to make the homes more sustainable with the heat pumps.

The director of the housing association finds it annoying. “But if we connect those pumps, we run the risk that the entire neighborhood will be without electricity,” he told the regional broadcaster. “We don’t want that. But it does show the urgency of strengthening the local grid. We have to get rid of gas, capacity problems cannot get in the way.”

From 2026, a central heating boiler must be exchanged for a (hybrid) heat pump if the heating system needs to be replaced. A heat pump extracts heat from the air, soil or groundwater. With a hybrid heat pump, the central heating boiler kicks in when it is very cold and when hot tap water is needed.

To make the more than a hundred seniors’ homes in Apeldoorn more sustainable, an additional electricity house must be installed. Grid operator Alliander expects this to happen in the first quarter of 2025. Homes throughout the country are being made more sustainable en masse, the grid operator sees, who calls this a positive development. “But it also requires much more capacity.”

For now, Alliander will look for solutions together with the municipality and the housing association. “We want to go faster, but we are also faced with a shortage of materials and technical personnel.” Tens of thousands of additional technicians will be needed in the energy sector in the coming years to make the energy transition possible.
