Apartment complex collapsed in Spanish seaside resort: several missing

The mayor of the seaside resort tells Spanish media that the aid workers are doing everything they can to get the victims out from under the rubble.

One person saved

According to the Spanish newspaper The country firefighters found one man alive and he was taken to hospital. A mother and daughter are still missing. At least six fire brigades are involved in the rescue.

What caused the building to collapse is unknown. It is also not clear how many people were in the building in Peñíscola when it collapsed.

The seaside town of Peñíscola is located about 140 kilometers north of Valencia. Only 8,000 people live there, but in the summer the number of residents of the popular holiday destination grows to 100,000.

Thirty residents

According to the municipality, the collapsed part of the complex consisted of eight houses and about thirty people lived there. The mayor said some of the residents were not at home. The Spanish police are trying to locate all residents.

The apartment complex was built in the 1990s. Residents of apartments in surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution and are spending the night in hotels.
