“Anyone can do theater”, the claim of the Albacete company with actors and actresses with visual disabilities

A visual disability is not a reason not to get on stage to experience the theater. This is what the company La Ruina Teatro claims this Saturday, July 31 at the Merida Festival, which will move this weekend to the Roman Theater of Regina, in Casas de Reina. It is one of the cultural associations supported by ONCE and is formed by blind or visually impaired people. They will perform the play ‘El coro’, from Juvenal’s Satires, written and directed by Juanma Cifuentes.

Pepa Muñoz is one of the leading actresses, who emphasizes that the company has already been working on stage for 30 years, together with three different directors. “It is the adaptation of a text by a group of choristers who go in Roman times looking for a place to perform in front of an audience. It makes references to very current things”, explains Pepa. She is the only totally blind woman who will perform on stage in Extremadura.

Pepa pointed out that the adaptation of the work is, in reality, less complex than one might think. “Each one is assigned their role and their text, and we begin to talk about adaptation. Each one of us has a different vision, so they adapt it to us either by computer or by audio. People study their role and we begin the work with the director, like a normal theater group, but with our own adaptations, “says the actress.

Having trouble seeing, they usually use a carpet, grass, or other items to get on stage. “In the adaptation of Juan Tenorio, we work around a very long table and with our references to know where we are,” he says. In addition, it ensures that the role of colleagues is essential. “It is very easy that at a given moment one turns a little and does not face the public. But there is always a colleague who can place us in our place”, Pepa emphasizes.

“We are very happy and very proud to be able to be in Mérida. We have been in Almagro for two years and we have also opened the Chinchilla festival. Proud to be able to go as fans and with our characteristics, that we can have come so far. And our work that we It’s hard, mamma mía! “, laughs the actress.

But also, he emphasizes, it is about claiming that “everyone has the right to do theater.” “We are capable of getting on stage with our disability. Of course it gives us a bit of tachycardia, because we have a handicap, but we are also very happy to be able to do it and to be able to improve ourselves. This is pure personal improvement,” he says.

“We have been sharing for so long, so many years, that we have patience, we put ourselves in the place of the other and we have a great complicity. It is enough that they take my hand to know what they want to say to me. And so we are a normal group, after all, “concludes Pepa Muñoz.
