Residents from the so-called “Covid-19 zone” of Antwerp and the surrounding municipalities are no longer allowed to exercise in Mechelen. This was decided by the city of Mechelen after it appeared that customers from the zone bypassed the ban by coming to branches in Mechelen.

The city took a mayor’s decision following police findings and social media reports. Customers from Antwerp and the surrounding municipalities, where fitness shops are closed under the governor’s police ordinance, go to branches in Mechelen. “That was confirmed to me personally by the governor today,” says mayor Alexander Vandersmissen. “Obviously, it cannot be the intention to circumvent the closure of the fitness shops by exercising elsewhere. I therefore did not hesitate and immediately made a decision by the mayor that forbids this. ”

The measure takes effect immediately. The police will visit all fitness shops in Mechelen this weekend and check whether the decision is complied with. Moreover, it is not sufficient that the registration only takes place centrally at the fitness chain. Every branch of the fitness group must also register who is present on the floor at all times.
