Anti-inflationary shield. A member of the NBP management board forecasts the consequences

The first part of the anti-inflationary shield came into force – from December 20, a reduced excise duty rate on fuel applies. Another part of the mechanism will be activated January 1, 2022, when the lower excise duty on electricity will apply and the fuel will be exempt from the retail sales tax.

In the opinion of the former finance minister in the PiS government, and currently a member of the NBP board, Paweł Szałamacha, the government’s move regarding energy carriers is “adequate and on time”.

– We import two-thirds of gas, we also import almost all crude oil. We have no influence on the prices. Despite this, the government is giving up the tax revenues that it could collect and throwing all resources to break the path of inflation – he said and added that the introduced mechanisms would cut inflation down by 1-1.5 percentage points in January.
