A small earthquake recorded north of Strasbourg on Monday February 8, shortly before 10 p.m. by the Institute of Globe Physics. It is an earthquake of magnitude 1,9 on the Richter scale, the epicenter of which is very close to Wantzenau.
According to the national seismic monitoring network (RéNaSS), it is an induced event, therefore produced by human activity. This earthquake is certainly related to the Fonroche geothermal project, which has already caused numerous earthquakes in the area. The project has been stopped definitively since December 2020, and an earthquake of 3.5 felt as far as Strasbourg.
Ongoing research on recent tremors
Even since the end of the geothermal project, the tremors continue, studies are underway to understand what exactly they are related to. Such a phenomenon is normal during a transition phase after stopping geothermal operations. But CNRS researchers are wondering if recent earthquakes are linked to a fault in particular and fear, in this case, more significant tremors.
The French Seismological Office offers residents of the region testify about what they felt.
