Following the banning of the Popular Front, the NIA conducted nationwide raids and arrested the officials. In protest against this, a hartal was called in the state on September 23. There was widespread violence against KSRTC buses during the hartal, which was conducted in violation of the High Court order that hartal should not be organized without prior notice. Taking cognizance of this, the division bench comprising Justice AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Justice CP Muhammad Niaz took up the case voluntarily.
