Thanks to a recent film adaptation, the Dune by writer Frank Herbert is back on track. It is therefore not surprising that Funcom, which has secured exclusive game adaptation rights from Legendary Entertainment, is working on several projects. About the first that arises from the authors of Commanche from the Nukklear studio, so far we only know that it should be a survival in the open world. During last night and The Game Awards, however, we learned about project number two, which will be the 4X real-time strategy of Dune: Spice Wars, which is being worked on by the Shiro Games studio, the authors of Northgard.
As the subtitle reveals, the game will fight for spices that are known to be found exclusively on the planet Arrakis. The player thus faces a tough duel with the other factions in a slightly different spirit than what they know from the mentioned film, ie the first book. The developers promise four factions, saying that the first two are never different from the main enemies of the saga Harkonnen and Atreides. The other two parties will be revealed later, probably during the preliminary access phase, which will start next year.
When it comes to fighting on a desert planet, the developers promise several possible approaches and orientations. Opponents from other factions will be able to be defeated in the open field, as well as due to growing economic influence and power. Various tricks, espionage or well-timed betrayals and sabotage, as fans of this work are used to, should not be left out. An important role will be played by reconnaissance, even with the help of ornithopters, establishing contact with the Fremen and their nets, and especially avoiding desert worms, which will be an unpredictable element in Spice Wars, which suddenly changes the conditions of combat and the fate of troops and genera.
