The year 2020 was overshadowed by the global corona pandemic, but the stadium and arena business did not stand still. Stadionwelt looks back on the most important topics of the year. Part 9: September

That was important

The world and Corona

In mid-September, spectators returned to many stadiums after more than half a year. Due to the comparatively low number of infections, spectators were at least partially allowed to be admitted to almost all stadiums. At the end of October, however, this was over again – the infection numbers went through the roof again across Germany.

Interview of the month

What are the trends and upcoming problems in modern event architecture? How big is the impact of the pandemic? In the third and final part, Stadionwelt spoke to Dan Meis, Founder & Managing Principal, MEIS architects.

Dan Meis

-Stadium world: What are the pressing issues architects are currently facing?
my: The biggest problem for us was that several projects were stopped by the shutdown. We will probably be able to continue at some point, but it is difficult to say when exactly. And it is impossible to keep our highly qualified staff waiting for the work to continue. We could lose an entire generation of architects if young people in particular decide to pursue other professions due to the pandemic. I’ve seen recessions before, but not one yet.

Stadium world: How does the coronavirus pandemic affect the construction and architecture of sports facilities in the short and long term?
my: The impact on our industry has been acute as almost all of our clients have run into financial problems. As a result, the staff was reduced in many places and the focus shifted to other types of buildings. When the construction projects resume and the big orders come back, it will be a challenge to find experienced and high quality employees.

-The SoFi Stadium in Inglewood just outside Los Angeles has broken various records. With almost 5 billion euros in construction costs for the entire complex, it is the most expensive stadium in the world. It was completed in September 2020. On November 17, 2016, construction of the new stadium began on the former site of the racecourse in Inglewood, which has been the home of the NFL teams Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams since the beginning of the 2020 season. A gigantic project: the stadium alone, which was built within a larger overall complex, cost around 2.2 billion euros. You can find the portrait here.

On my own behalf
