ANIAC-Togo acquires 10 hectares for the treatment of chemical waste

The National Authority for the Prohibition of Chemical Armies (ANIAC-Togo) continues its activities. This structure, created in 2015 by presidential decree, was “extremely insightful” in implementing its 2020 action plan despite the coronavirus pandemic. The institution which was delighted recently to have avoided in Togo the tragedy of Beirut on Wednesday drew up a glowing assessment of its activities this year.

The review was presented by Amah Hunlede. In front of the representatives of the ministries and technical directions, the representatives of the diplomatic and consular corps and the media, the president of ANIAC-Togo affirmed that despite the pandemic, his institution was able to carry out all the activities planned for 2020.

In particular, the awareness of the actors involved in the management of chemicals, the training of the various stakeholders in the management of chemical activity and the identification and acquisition of treatment and neutralization sites for toxic chemicals.

At the same time, in the aftermath of the explosions of chemical stocks at the port of Beirut in Lebanon, ANIAC-Togo organized a press briefing last September where it provided information on the risks of toxic chemicals and the safety and security measures. possible security for better prevention.

Mr. Hunlede also includes in the 2020 report, the holding of national workshops. These are the workshop for the development and validation of reflex sheets in October, the national workshop for the development and validation of the Guide on the Transport of Dangerous Goods, the workshop for the presentation of the Convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons and its implementation in Togo; and the national awareness-raising and capacity building tour for personnel in terms of compliance with chemical safety and security measures in industrial environments.

The president of ANIAC-Togo adds that during the final year, missions were carried out in the Kara, plateaus and maritime regions. They made it possible to officially acquire a 10 hectare site in the plateau area which will be used for the treatment and neutralization of chemical products and waste.

“We are working for a world free from chemical weapons. Our role is to identify all chemicals and see to what extent they can be neutralized or if possible transform them so that they are not harmful to health, ”he said.

For the coming year, Mr. Hunlede and his colleagues intend to strengthen the relationship with the media for even more impact.
