Angers Clean Up Day: Citizen Mobilization and Challenges Faced by Associations in Waste Collection

The Young Economic Chamber of Angers and its region (JCEA) organized* the “Angers Clean Up Day”, a morning of waste collection aimed at raising awareness and mobilizing citizens to clean up the banks of Maine on Sunday June 25th. During this morning, about fifty participants from various backgrounds collected 80kg of waste after 2 hours of work.

At the end of this collection morning, an article published in Ouest France (source) raised the difficulty for associations to access waste collection centers in the agglomeration, since the latter must now pay in the same way as a company, even within the framework of a collection campaign such as Angers Clean Up Day.

Indeed, since January 1, 2023, access to public recycling centers in Angers Loire Métropole has been reserved for individuals with a badge. Volunteers from associations residing in the territory of Angers Loire Métropole can therefore make contributions using their personal access badge, but under conditions (source).

The request was immediately heard by the community, which was able to be reactive, and proposed a meeting with our association. Last Thursday, July 13, Alexandre BIZON (member of the JCEA) and Edouard CORTES (Vice-President in charge of training at the JCEA) had the opportunity to meet Karine ENGEL, Deputy Mayor of Angers for Citizenship and Veterans Affairs, to discuss this subject.

The town hall is currently studying this change of rule, namely the possibility of making access to waste disposal centers free for associations carrying out this type of action. A necessary reflection that the Angers Clean Up Day action has made it possible to support and which will be useful to all the Angers associations working to collect waste!
