But now the Merkel doppelganger is putting an end to it. And that’s obviously a good thing. Because in an interview with DER WESTEN, she reveals: “The fears accompany me almost every day.”

Guest on various TV programs, while shooting the movie “Tolo Tolo – The Great Journey” in Rome, at the Documenta in Athens and on the birthday of a Russian billionaire: Ursula Wanecki (64) from Attendorn in the Sauerland (NRW) has become a real celebrity herself through her job. It should really just be a hobby.

The Angela Merkel doppelganger is regularly booked for events on behalf of an agency in Mülheim due to her deceptively real appearance of the Chancellor. “I’ve actually been everywhere,” she says. She is particularly often in Berlin, where she takes part in city tours through the capital. “People take pictures with ‘Frau Merkel'”, says Ursula Wanecki. And further: “Angela Merkel is like a masscot. It just belongs to Berlin and people like to take pictures home with them. “
During her appearances, the Merkel doppelganger even met other politicians, even if they were mostly doubles. She recently appeared in Austria with the doubles of Vladimir Putin, Greta Thunberg and Donald Trump. And: “I was at the opening of a large clinic. Our Chancellor was supposed to come, but she canceled. And there I was with the Leonardo DiCaprio double, ”recalls the 64-year-old.

After all, Ursula Wanecki earns an average of 800 euros per appearance, even if she has to give part of it to the agency and for taxes.
Similarity to Angela Merkel is “a gift”
But how does this resemblance to Angela Merkel come about? “I put on my trousers and my blazer – depending on what is needed – do my hair and I go out of the house and I’m Ms. Merkel.” That is a gift. Your gestures are almost innate. Because she likes the Chancellor, Ursula Wanecki can portray her so well.
“Although I’m taller and thinner than Ms. Merkel,” she wonders. And yet: “Regardless of whether I wear trousers or a skirt, my hair is shorter or longer, I am always spoken to on the street.”

It was agreed from the start that Ursula Wanecki would never pretend to be the real Angela Merkel. “It was always very, very important to me that people didn’t mistake me for it,” said the 64-year-old. “I still wanted to stay me.”
Once she had a shoot in front of the Reichstag building, during which it was obvious that she was not Angela Merkel. Nevertheless, protesters have handed her a letter of petition. “So I gave it back and said we were filming here. I am not Ms. Merkel. But they didn’t even notice it that way. ”When she gets into a taxi in Berlin, she is always asked:“ Where to Ms. Chancellor? ”
At the latest when Ursula Wanecki speaks, it becomes clear that she is not Angela Merkel. Because the Attendornerin with Polish descent has an Eastern European accent. But she has come up with an unusual explanation for this: “I spoke to Vladimir Putin on the phone for a very long time and the eastern accent stayed the same,” she says with a laugh.
Merkel double: Job has a huge downside
There is still a considerable downside to her job. “I used to go out of the house, I didn’t worry and I was free. Now there are also situations that I would not have wished for, ”says the 64-year-old. And she is shocked: “When I cross the street, I see if someone wants to run over me or when I am on the escalator, I see if someone wants to push me. The fears accompany me almost every day. ”She had never known the fears before. That’s why she’s always out and about with bodyguards in Berlin.
In addition, the double work is very stressful. When she performs, she always keeps in mind that a lot depends on her: people have been booked, a trip has been booked and she is always worried that she will get sick or break a leg, for example. After all, you couldn’t replace your failure with someone else.
The 64-year-old still does not regret life as a Merkel doppelganger. Because she meets a lot of people, makes new contacts, has gained a lot of political skills and overall it has enriched her life very much. Her family and friends would have got used to her job too.

Merkel doppelganger longs for the end of her job
With the upcoming general election at the end of September, after Angela Merkel’s 16-year term in office, the Merkel doppelganger’s job will also end. But that’s not bad for Ursula Wanecki. On the contrary: “I’m glad that this is running out, that my life is getting a little bit of peace,” said the 64-year-old. She wants to devote herself to private matters and go on a trip to the Baltic States. The dutiful life is very stressful for her.
“Get up in the morning, drink coffee, have a long breakfast and never think that something isn’t there yet. That’s what I really dream of. ”And she would like to get to know Angela Merkel personally over a cup of coffee.
