Angela Merkel denounces racist “murder”

Angela Merkel denounced this Thursday the “murder” of
George Floyd, an African American killed during a police arrest last week. The German Chancellor spoke about the
” racism “ which strikes, according to her, a “very polarized American society”.

“The murder of George Floyd is a terrible thing. Racism is a terrible thing. American society is very polarized, ”lamented the Chancellor on the public channel ZDF. “Racism has always existed. And unfortunately, this is also the case here (in Germany), “she added. She also says she “hopes” that the protests will remain “peaceful” in the United States.

The four police officers who arrested George Floyd in Minneapolis are now all prosecuted by the law and his death was reclassified as “murder”, as claimed by the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have demonstrated since last week.

Asked about the President Donald trumpAngela Merkel, in power since 2005, replied that as far as she was concerned, her “demands in politics (were) always to try to bring people together, to reconcile them”. “I think the political style (of President Trump) is very controversial,” she added.

“I work with all elected presidents around the world. And of course with the American president, ”argued the German leader. “All I can do is hope that we can work together.”
