Di María was also linked with overseas MLS or Saudi Arabia, but decided to return to Benfica, which was his first European stop between 2007 and 2010.
The Argentinian world champion played 121 competitive matches for the Lisbon club during the aforementioned period, scoring 15 goals and providing 28 assists. In the 2009/10 season, he celebrated the championship title with Benfica.

Di María’s official presentation will take place tomorrow at 19:04, a symbolic time for Benfica, as the reigning Portuguese champions were founded in 1904.
13 years ago, Di María moved from Lisbon to Real Madrid, then he also played for Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and the aforementioned Juventus, where he worked last season.
“I have come to the end of a difficult and complicated period. I leave knowing that I gave everything to the club to win more trophies, but it was not possible.
