The French film Anatomy of a Fall (Anatomy of a fall) is the big winner this year at the European Film Awards, the most important prizes for the European film industry. The film follows the court trial of a woman suspected of killing her husband. The 36th European Film Awards ceremony took place in Berlin.
The director of Anatomy of a Fall, the Frenchwoman Justine Triet, was awarded the prize for best director. The German leading actress Sandra Hüller was named best actress. The court thriller also won in the best screenplay category. The film was also awarded the Palme d’Or this year, the most important prize of the Cannes film festival.
De Deen Mads Mikkelsen (Busy, The hunt) won the award for best actor. The 58-year-old received the award for his role in The Promised Land (Bastarden) by director Nikolaj Arcel, who was not nominated for best film.
No Dutch winners
During the awards ceremony in Berlin, prizes were also awarded to the documentary Smoke Sauna Sisterhood and the animated film Robot Dreams.
There were no Dutch contenders. Sweet Dreams by director Ena Sendijarević was the Dutch entry, but it did not make it to the nominations.
