Analysis of Latvian Media Space: Priorities and Russian Narratives

Expanding the weekly review of Russian television propaganda analysis “Behind the curtain”, we publish the second monthly analysis of Latvian media space priorities, paying attention to their correlation with Russian narratives.

In Latvian news broadcasts in June, apart from economy and security, the Song Festival, the government transformation process, traffic, education, health and other topics were also among the main topics. If last summer there was a lot of talk about energy availability and prices, now these topics have faded into the background. Perhaps autumn will come, the inevitable heating season, and the topic of energy will return like a boomerang.

The topics of Ukraine and Russia remain firmly in the center of attention of the Latvian media space. The brief mutiny of Yevgeniy Prigozhin and the private military company “Wagner” on Midsummer morning created a loud bang in the information room. However, although many nuances of this event are still not completely clear, and probably will remain so, this issue has already managed to be quickly “forgotten” in the Russian media.

There was still a lot of news about the current hostilities. At the beginning of the month, the news about the explosion of the Kahovka hydroelectric power station (HEP) flashed rapidly, followed by the topic of aid – now not only to victims of war, but also to those affected by floods. The news of Ukraine’s counter-offensive disappeared behind much bigger news – the news on Midsummer’s Day about the march of Prigozhin’s mercenary army through Russia, which started as quickly as it ended, leaving a mountain of questions about what is really happening in Russia right now and in the battles of its various clans.
