Jakarta, CNBC IndonesiaIndonesia has entered the gates of the political year. The presidential candidates also held their first debate held by the General Election Commission (KPU) some time ago.

A number of political observers criticized the statements made by the three presidential candidates. Anies Baswedan and Prabowo Subianto competed fiercely in the first debate. At the same time, Ganjar Pranowo was considered behind because he was confused about the branding vision and mission.

The following is the analysis of the Director of Trias Politika Strategic Agung Baskoro and Political Analyst and Executive Director of Algebra Strategic Arifki Chaniago regarding the performance of the first presidential debate participating in the 2024 presidential election.

Anies Baswedan

Agung assessed that Anies dominated the first debate with good rhetoric. He believes that Anies has the freedom to attack the ideas of the other two candidates because they carry a vision of “change”.

He assessed that the three candidates had the same readiness to face the debate theme this time. “In segments 1, 2, 3, Prabowo and Anies are tied, Ganjar is stuck. In the rest, Anies is ahead of the other two,” said Agung when contacted by CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (12/12/2023).

He considered that Anies also benefited from Prabowo’s unpreparedness at the question and answer session. Anies also benefited from Ganjar’s questions which actually provided a stage for him.

Arifki highlighted Anies’ appearance, which focused on portraying himself as an intellectual. This is reflected in various data displays.

Apart from that, Anies often labels his competitors’ answers “less comprehensive” or asks for data. “Anies is trying to show his intellect. He has scientific research to answer questions. He wants to build the perception that he has data,” said Arifki.

Prabowo Subianto

Arifki thinks that Prabowo this time does not have as good rhetorical skills as Anies or Ganjar. This can be seen from Prabowo’s appearance in the first presidential debate for the 2024 presidential election.

Even so, Arifki believes that Prabowo is clever in winning the hearts of the public. He highlighted Prabowo’s tricks such as “sorry ye” or “Mas Anies, Mas Anies” when responding to attacks by the other two candidates.

“Prabowo also reads now in the era of social media. That’s why Prabowo’s chosen answer is simple and easy for the public to understand. Tomorrow in the next week it will probably go viral on Tiktok because it’s funny,” said Arifki.

Meanwhile, Agung saw that Prabowo was wasting many opportunities. Prabowo often does not use the remaining time to answer or ask questions.

He saw that Prabowo and Anies were actually tied for the first three sessions. However, Prabowo was unable to maximize the next three sessions.

“Segments four to six, Prabowo missed out on questions and answers,” he said.

Ganjar Pranowo

Ganjar’s performance is considered not as brilliant as Anies and Prabowo. Arifki assessed that Ganjar lost the stage because of Prabowo’s heated debate with Anies.

Apart from that, Ganjar was unable to offer a clear vision. At the same time, Prabowo firmly fights for sustainability and Anies calls for change.

“Ganjar’s bargaining power is also unclear or perhaps there is a segment of Ganjar voters who have the potential to run to Prabowo,” said Arifki.

Agung said Ganjar gave too much “cooked bait” to Anies. Ganjar’s questions actually provided space for Anies to steal points.

Ganjar’s only stage was when he attacked Prabowo on human rights issues. However, Prabowo was able to survive well.

“Ganjar’s pointers were the most striking regarding human rights. He asked whether Pak Prabowo was presenting a human rights court, but Prabowo denied this by mentioning tendentiousness and five-year issues. So Ganjar didn’t get full points,” he said.
