An unpleasant smell was felt in St. Petersburg and later in Helsinki on Sunday; its source has not been determined

The cause of the smell has not yet been determined. Sunday around At 15.30, the Helsinki rescue service announced that according to current information, the smell does not pose a threat to health, the newspaper “Helsingin Sanomat” reports.

The smell was reported to the rescue service after 15.00 in several calls from a fairly wide area. The source of the smell was investigated with extensive cooperation between the authorities led by the Helsinki Rescue Service. The Helsinki Police, the Finnish Border Guard, the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the Finnish Environment Institute and the Emergency Response Center were involved.

Sunday at 17.10 The rescue service announced that the source of the smell has not yet been identified.

The Border Guard checked the sea area of ​​the Gulf of Finland. The Estonian authorities were also contacted about the situation. The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority reported that no radiation was detected.

However, the rescue service said it was monitoring the situation and instructed people to close windows and turn off ventilation if there was a strong smell in the premises. The rescue service also advised people to seek medical help if they experience any symptoms due to the smell.

Air quality was not affected by the smell, but according to air quality indicators, the situation is similar to other warm spring days: the main problem is street dust.
