Buenos Aires – (AFP):

The Argentine federal prosecutor has opened a preliminary investigation against former right-wing President Mauricio Macri on the suspicion that he requested spying on the heads of companies, employees, artists and figures from the opposition and from his majority during his term, judicial sources announced Friday.

The complaint was filed by Cristina Camagno, who was appointed by the current left-wing president, Alberto Fernandez, to scrutinize the FBI’s work to reorganize it.

Judicial sources indicated that Camanyo says in her complaint that “the e-mails of about 100 people were spied on without orders from the judiciary.” Information material was confiscated from the FBI and handed over to the judiciary.

Federal Prosecutor Jorge de Liu expanded a preliminary investigation against then-intelligence chief Gustavo Arribas and other employees.

Among those spied on were ambassadors, journalists working on television channels, union leaders, businessmen, representatives, and state governors, not only from the opposition but from the majority at the time.

These spying operations also appear to have affected staff close to Macri, such as the director of the anti-corruption bureau, Laura Alonso.
