An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 shakes the north of Galicia

An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 shook northern Galicia this Friday morning. The tremors were felt in the provinces of A Coruña and Lugo, where numerous citizens echoed what had happened, and even in some municipalities of Asturias.

The National Geographic Institute registered the earthquake at 06:32 hours in the morning with a magnitude of 4.4 and maximum intensity III-IV. The epicenter was located very close to the surface of the Cantabrian Sea, “about 50-60 kilometers from the coast north of Cariño” according to pick up Europa Press.

“It is not of such magnitude to generate a series of aftershocks”, the IGN guard seismologist told the agency, adding that “it cannot be ruled out” that there are other smaller tremors. “The normal thing is that they are more isolated,” concludes the expert in statements to Europa Press.

The biggest earthquake since 1997

This is the biggest earthquake in the Galician community from the one registered on May 21, 1997 with epicenter in Triacastela, which had had a magnitude of 5.1. In this regard, the IGN asks citizens to fill out a macroseismic questionnaire to better understand what happened and determine the force with which the tremors occurred.

Residents of the regions of A Coruña, Ferrolterra and Santiago de Compostela, as well as Mariña Lugo and the city of Lugo, felt the tremor that lasted only a few seconds. Citizens of A Coruña, Oleiros, Valdoviño, Irixoa, Cervo, Viveiro, Ferrol and Lugo got in touch with 112 Galicia to warn about the earthquake, which generated numerous comments on social networks.
