An earthquake in Ordes is felt in Carballo and Abegondo | Radio Coruña | Today for Today A Coruña

A Coruña has registered an earthquake of magnitude 3 on the Richter scale tonight with an epicenter in the municipality of Tordoia, Orders. It happened around 11:18 at night at a depth of about five kilometers, according to the National Geographic Institute.

An earthquake that has been felt weakly in other municipalities of A Coruña such as Cerceda, A Laracha in Carballo or Abegondo. Rubén, a resident of Tordoia, recounts what happened: “We were at home and suddenly we felt like a noise or vibration, we thought something had fallen from the house but we went out the door and there were more neighbors who began to comment that it was an earthquake” .

The local government of Tordoia spread the news through its social networks, and numerous inhabitants of Tordoia and neighboring municipalities shared their experience on their ‘Facebook and’ Twitter ‘profiles.

Neighbors of this municipality assured that the earthquake “was heard very loud” and that “the ground shook a little” after hearing a noise or a roar.

Another of the points of greater intensity has been A Laracha. Álex, a resident of the municipality, told Europa Press about his experience with the earthquake that shook his home, located in a village about three kilometers from the urban center.

“I heard a combination between the noise of a distant explosion and a tremor, like when heavy machinery passes on the road,” he explained, at which point he realized what was happening.

The tremor “was not very strong, it was mild”, but of sufficient intensity to be something “striking” and identifiable and to alert local residents, who began to call each other to comment on what happened.

In another house, about 500 meters away, they were ‘quite startled’ when they heard the noise, since they thought that the animals they have on their property had escaped.

Maria José, a neighbor of the Lemaio parish, reported that this phenomenon was also felt at home. At first, she thought it was thunder or a storm, but her husband did feel the shaking on the windows of the house.

In a neighboring house, the earthquake shook the cutlery and knives on the table, and people from other parishes also felt the earthquake.

Increasing intensity

The situation remained an anecdote and the earthquake did not cause damage of any kind, although it has become the news of the day for the municipalities of the region.

The earthquake has been felt both in Tordoia and in areas such as Abegondo, Oleiros and Ordes, and some of its inhabitants came to perceive it with intensity IV.

Galicia is located in an area with low to moderate seismicity, according to the National Geographic Institute, although the historical catalog has notable precedents located in the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea, such as those of 1783 and 1899 (with intensity less than VII) and other earthquakes near the coast of intensity VII, such as those of 1909 in Viana do Castelo (Portugal), 1910 in El Ferrol and 1920 in Pontevedra.

Precisely, the intensity and magnitude of these phenomena has been increased in recent years, with more than 30 earthquakes in the province since 2017.

The last, in Friars

On May 17, an earthquake was recorded in the early hours of the morning with an epicenter in Frades, of magnitude 3 and intensity 2, which was felt in places such as O Pino, Ordes, Oroso, Betanzos, Oza-Cesures, Tordoia, Carral, A Baña, Santiago of Compostela, Lugo and Outeiro de Rei.

Three other earthquakes occurred in April, with an epicenter in the municipalities of A Gudiña (Ourense), Dozón (Pontevedra) and Taboada (Lugo). The second of them was the most intense, with magnitude 2 at a depth of one kilometer.
