An absolute record with the price of electricity on the stock exchange – BGN 250.64 per megawatt hour

Power lines in Southern Bulgaria

Tomorrow, June 24, we have the most expensive electricity in Europe

BGN 250.64 per megawatt-hour of basic electricity. This absolute record of high price of electricity on the free market marked the day-ahead trading on the Bulgarian energy exchange with a delivery day of June 24. The peak energy – from 9 am to 8 pm, was traded at a price of BGN 269.26, and the post-peak energy – from 1 to 8 am and from 9 pm to midnight, for BGN 232.02.

For this day, electricity prices in Bulgaria and Greece are the highest in Europe and are the same (see chart). In fact, since Monday, prices in our country, and in Europe, are going up. On Monday the basic energy on the Bulgarian market exceeded BGN 165, on Tuesday it was BGN 177.62, on Wednesday – BGN 194.17.

Since April, the prices of electricity on the European stock exchanges, as well as in our country, have been rising constantly, but in June the trade is chasing January prices in the conditions of shortage.

So far, the biggest record on the Bulgarian market was on January 10, 2017 – BGN 245 per megawatt hour. If we return the tape to this year, we will remember that this is the negative January, when there was a shortage and the neighbors were saving themselves and no one responded to help.

The other high prices are again in January. On January 8, 2019, a megawatt-hour was traded for BGN 206, on January 17, it was BGN 209.

Experts commented that so far the most expensive month was January 2019 with an average price of BGN 131.78 per megawatt hour. It is expected that in June 2021 he will break this record with somewhere around BGN 140 and more.

Unlike the January months in some years, now there is electricity, but it is expensive, commented the industry. The reasons for high prices across Europe are peak carbon prices, which is stopping coal-fired power plants, and because there has been no wind lately and electricity prices across the continent are going up, as the market is deprived of cheaper wind energy.

Last week the prices in our country were high, but the lowest in Europe. What happens to reach record levels?

Experts comment that the American power plants have exhausted the quotas set by the EWRC for the regulated market and have stopped units. As “24 Chasa” wrote, every year the energy regulator sets quotas of electricity to be produced by the two American power plants for NEK, respectively – for the regulated market. Now these quotas have been exhausted earlier, such was the forecast for the commission’s consumption, and NEK fills these missing quantities for household consumers with its energy, which does not go to the free market.

And due to the high prices of the emissions, in case of quotas they are paid by NEK, the price of the two lines becomes uncompetitive and the electricity is unsaleable.

In our country, too, the wind power plants have almost stopped, today at 16.42 only 50 megawatts were loaded, which gives 1.04% of the load of the electricity system.

43.19% of the electricity production is from Kozloduy NPP, and from the leaks – 17.12%. The old ones were also loaded – the big ones of NEK with 14.63%, and the small private ones – 7.30%. The share of solar power plants in the load of the system was only 9.06 percent.
