Amsterdamsche Corps opens registrations and continues with ’emergency management’ | Inland

After the controversial lustrum celebration, the Amsterdamsche Corps continues battered. With two less board members, registrations for new members started today – a week later than planned.

According to the statutes, the board of the Amsterdamsche Corps – the Senate – must consist of six people in order to make decisions, but on Friday it was decided during a general meeting of members to grant the board dispensation. ‘The emergency board’, which only has four members after the departure of two board members, can therefore still make decisions.

One of the resigned board members is the Vice President of the Corps, who women called whores during the controversial men’s dinner during the lustrum celebration two weeks ago. Chairman of the Board Heleen Vos stepped on Thursday also because she no longer wants to continue to bear responsibility for incidents and behavior of members that exceed her personal limit, she said during a closed meeting at the society.

Annemijn Oskam, formerly assessor within the Senate, has been appointed as the new chairman of the board of the Amsterdamsche Corps.

Under the leadership of Oskam, registrations for new members resumed this Tuesday. They were supposed to start last Wednesday, but were temporarily suspended due to the fuss. Until now. New members can register since Tuesday 1 pm.

hazing

In previous years there were always more applications than the Amsterdam student corps ASC/AVSV could handle. The question is whether that will be the case again this year. If there are too many registrations, a lottery will be held on 4 August.

The hazing of the new members will be handled differently this year than in previous years, after the green time had to be stopped prematurely last year because six fraternities were guilty of gross abuse and humiliation, according to internal investigations.

There is therefore no night program for aspiring members this year and there is no longer any room for ‘purposeless hazing activities’. This means, among other things, keeping new members awake unnecessarily. During the day there will be extra supervision by the association.

Former chairman Heleen Vos said last year that a lot had to change within the Corps. But the ‘drastic culture change’ she had in mind has not yet taken place in view of the abuses during the lustrum party.

Disrespectful speeches

The lustrum party that took place from 16 to 25 July was a succession of transgressive behaviour, Vos acknowledged afterwards. Hundreds of members have reacted with shock to the sexually intimidating, misogynistic and disrespectful speeches delivered at the men’s dinner. The ‘act’, in which half-naked women banged on men’s heads, also turned out to have been hired by the Corps itself.

The Amsterdam student corps ASC/AVSV is still investigating the abuses that took place during the lustrum party. The Public Prosecution Service announced on Monday that it would not launch a criminal investigation into the statements made during the lustrum party of the Amsterdam Student Corps. Mayor Femke Halsema called the speech, in which it was announced that she would ‘break the necks of women to stick their dick in’, as a call to violence.
