Amsterdam apologizes for slavery past, we also had slavery: “Exchanged for weapons and textiles”

The slave trade was a triangular trade. “It was all about product and barter trade. In West Africa there was a need for all kinds of European products. The most coveted were weapons, but textiles, wine and crockery were also shipped, with which slaves were bought,” the former diplomat continues.

“The slaves transported by the pre-Belgian slave traders mainly went to Haiti or Cuba. On these Caribbean islands, slaves were sold mainly for sugar, coffee and tropical timber. These products then came back to Europe.”

According to Portocarero, there was hardly any money involved in this trade, it was mainly aimed at exchange. “There were also physically few or no slaves in our regions”.
