Amnesty International Launches ‘Images of Rebellion’ Book Celebrating Cuba’s Civic Resistance

Amnesty International launches the book “Images of Rebellion”, an extraordinary visual compendium that not only narrates, but also celebrates the rebellious spirit of civic resistance in Cuba. This book compiles an emotional selection of the more than 21,000 letters and drawings of global support sent to Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Cuban artist and prisoner of conscience.

“Images of Rebellion” is a call to action and a vibrant reminder of the ongoing fight for human rights and freedom of expression in Cuba. Through its 132 pages, the book unfolds inspiring moments of mobilization, from the end of 2020 to the historic protests of July 2021, along with a representation of severe government repression.

At the heart of this work are the stories of five people designated as prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International: Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, Maykel ‘Osorbo’ Castillo Pérez, José Daniel Ferrer García, Loreto Hernández García and Donaida Pérez Paseiro. Their personal stories serve as a powerful testimony to the fight for justice and freedom in an environment of increasing repression.

This book is part of the #CubaWithoutRepression campaign with which Amnesty International seeks to denounce the plight of these five people, mobilize global solidarity to significantly pressure the Cuban authorities to cease repressive practices, and secure the release of all those unjustly imprisoned. for exercising and demanding respect and guarantee of their human rights.

The launch of the book “Images of Rebeldía” took place at a special event on April 4 at Amnesty International’s Americas office in Mexico City, marking the beginning of a series of presentations that will take place both in Mexico as in other countries during 2024 and 2025, including national book fairs and events focused on human rights and freedom of expression.

The book is available in English and Spanish in digital format with free access on the web cubasinrepresion.orgensuring that the message of resistance and hope, which “Images of Rebellion” represents, reaches the hands of as many people as possible.
