AMLO’s immigration plan, in line with US policy: Biden

US President Joe Biden said in an interview broadcast tonight that he and his government are trying to determine whether he has the authority to act on his own to close his country’s southern border with Mexico to migrants if it is deemed necessary. , described as “the best” his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose plan to attack the causes of migration, such as unemployment in the countries of origin, is in line with his immigration proposal.

In a wide-ranging interview with Univision, Biden said that because bipartisan legislation that would have given him the authority to close the border was held up by Republicans in Congress, he was being encouraged to try to go it alone.

“We are examining whether or not I have that power,” Biden said, adding that there is “no guarantee” he will have that ability without the legislation.

“When the border has more than five thousand people a day trying to cross it because you can’t manage it, slow it down. There is no guarantee that I would have all that power on my own without legislation. And some have suggested that you should just give it a try. And if the court stops me, the court stops me. But we are trying to work on that, work on that right now,” he explained.

Migration is a central issue in this year’s presidential campaign. Former President Donald Trump, Biden’s likely Republican opponent in the Nov. 5 election, has accused Biden of cheating on border issues.

He acknowledged that “we are in a situation where, for example, we don’t even have enough officers to interview people and discern whether they have a legitimate fear or concern to qualify for entry. We don’t have enough people at the border with our Border Patrol personnel. “We don’t have enough machinery to detect fentanyl and illegal drugs coming in.”

To the question about the Mexican president’s proposal “for a plan to combat the fundamental causes of migration in the Western Hemisphere. He calls for the United States to invest $20 billion, as well as to ease sanctions against Venezuela and Cuba, among other things. His opponent (Donald Trump) said he wouldn’t give Mexico a dime. How would you work with President López Obrador to reduce migration and also with his successors?

To which Biden responded: “Before Obrador even presented that plan, I started that plan years ago. Look, it’s not like people are sitting around a table, a hand-hewn table somewhere in Guatemala, saying, I have a great idea. We’re going to sell everything we have, give it to a criminal gang. They will take us to the other side of the border. They will leave us on the other side with a language you don’t speak, where they don’t want me. Won’t it be fun? People don’t… leave because they have no alternatives. And so what we’re doing is… we did, and it worked for a while until they cut it, is providing the ability to create jobs in the countries where people are leaving. People don’t want to leave where they are from. “People want to make sure they have the opportunity to make a living, and they would prefer to make a living where they are.”

“And so I think, I think your idea is consistent with what I’ve been promoting. And I think we should be doing something like that,” said the head of the White House.

Asked if he has a good relationship with President López Obrador, Biden said: “Yes, yes. I find it direct. He has never cheated on me. He knows what he wants. He keeps his word. “That’s the most I can ask for.”
