«America’s Next Top Model:» – «Top Model»-skandalene

The reality show that was to give young girls a chance in the modeling industry was long described as one of the best reality series from the early 2000s. With Tyra Banks (47) as host held the program for a full 24 seasons, before the series was canceled in 2018.

Like a number of other series and films, “America’s Next Top Model” has not stood the test of time particularly well, among other things Vox previously pointed out

– How dare you?

Since the series began, Banks has had great success both as an actress and businesswoman.

Many probably know her as a former presenter, for her own talk show “The Tyra Banks Show”, and as a former supermodel for several major brands, among other things, «Victoria`s Secret».

But despite the great success Banks got from the series, several fans have subsequently reacted to the model’s many previous statements and treatment of the participants.

A 14-year-old clip from the TV series “America’s next top model” has been picked up again, and now host Tyra Banks has had to apologize for the incident.

Already in season four of the series, Banks’ most talked about TV moment came on the TV screen, where the host yells at former participant Tiffany Richardson (38) when she is sent home.

The confrontation later became known as a very popular “meme”, which is used frequently today.

It was when Richardson and fellow rival Rebecca Epley (38) were sent home that Banks responded. While Epley cried, Richardson remained silent – which must have annoyed Banks.

The host responded by accusing Richardson of not taking the competition seriously. The model even claimed she was just tired of crying.

-I’ve never in my life screamed like that to a girl before! I cheered on you, everyone cheered on you. How are you watching, the host shouted at Richardson.

Richardson commented on the quarrel in an interview with Buzzfeed in 2017, where she claimed that several parts of the session were cut off.

Blackface

The judging panel became known for pushing the participants to the limit, and consisted of several famous faces such as Janice Dickinson (66), Kimora Lee Simmons (45), Jay Manuel (48) and J. Alexander (66).

One of the series’ many controversial photographs was when the participants were made dark in their skin, better known today as blackface. The participants, who were fair-skinned, wore dark make-up and dressed in traditional clothing to emphasize the ethnicity they were to present.

The controversial photo shoot took place in season four, but the team also appeared in season 13.

In an article from Insider Several former producers, judges and participants have shared their opinions about the controversial photography.

Banks and former producer Ken Mok (59) tweeted apologies last year.

“I’ve seen the posts about the insensitivity in some of the ‘America’s Next Top Models’ moments, and I agree with you. Looking back, some of them were weird choices. I appreciate their honest feedback, and I send so much love and virtual hugs “, wrote the supermodel.

Mok stood behind the host, and emphasized that it was not just Tyra who made the choice in the series – but a completely creative team.

– My little panda

But it was not only the photographs that were problematic, also the conversations the judges had with the participants have attracted attention.

Former participant Winnie Harlow (26), known from season 21, was one of many contestants who got to know the harsh comments. She is now one of the world’s most sought after models.

During a photo shoot in the series, photographer and judge Yu Tsai called her a panda, which did not go down well.

The supermodel was the first participant to participate in the skin disease vitiligo, and reacted strongly to the statement.

Vitiligo is a condition with pigment-free, white spots on the skin.

When the 26-year-old confronted the former judge, the mood quickly became tense, and instead of apologizing, Tsai reacted with disbelief, saying that she did not even deserve a nickname anymore.

Harlow, who later became the public spokesperson for the skin disease vitiligo, later received the apology she wanted.

“Sorry to Winnie Harlow. I do not want to call you a panda again. I can change, can you », Tsai wrote on Twitter in 2014.

– Do not walk around screaming

In season five, former participant Kim Stolz (37) proudly stands out as queer, and wants to be open about his attitude to the judges and the production.

“I’m queer, and I’m very proud of that,” Stolz told Banks in the episode.

To Stolz’s great despair, the message was not well received.

-I think there are certain things to be proud of. Like, I’m a proud dark-skinned woman, but I do not go around screaming it? I’m dark, I’m dark, you see, says a harsh Banks back to Stolz.

Several fans have since reacted strongly to the harsh reception Stolz received from the judges.

Former judge Jay Manuel, who is also queer, has also commented on the incident.

– I sat right next to Tyra, and I remember that I felt very uncomfortable with what she said, Manuel said in an interview with Variety last year.

Went out in video

In recent times, several former participants have also commented on Banks’ poor handling and treatment of the models.

In each season, fans would get to know many different girls and their history.

Many had undergone previous childhood traumas, rapes and other bad events, which in many cases were told by the person in question, or by Banks.

Several former participants are now coming forward, claiming that Banks used their traumas to their own advantage.

Former participant Lisa D’Amato (40) posted an Instagram video in January, which was directly aimed at the former host. The video also features former contestants, such as Angela Preston (34), Jeana Turner (27) and Alexandria Everett (32).

Lisa, who was sexually, physically and emotionally abused as a child, clearly directed dissatisfaction with Banks in the video.

The model ended up in sixth place in season five in 2005, and won in 2011 when previous participants participated in a so-called “All stars” season.

In 2006, however, the production believed that the previous model had broken the contract by talking about the alleged ill-treatment she had been subjected to in the program. It appeared in an episode of «E! True Hollywood », according to E! Online.

-I did it knowing that it was a breach of contract. A lot because I felt it was my duty to warn other girls who wanted to try their hand at the program, and to tell them that what they are doing is exploiting you and your traumas, D’Amato said.

“Jail”

During the filming, the models were given strict rules to abide by. The girls were given little freedom to do everyday things, and several have referred to participating in the program as a prison stay.

Angela Preston has long been open about how she thought Banks and the production exploited her.

Preston, who actually won season 17, was later disqualified when the producers learned that the model had previously worked as an escort. Instead, the final episode was filmed again and D’Amato was named the winner.

In retrospect, Preston Banks and the manufacturer sued for three million dollars.

In an interview with Daily Mail in 2015, Preston told what it was like to work with Banks and production.

– Before, I used to look up to Tyra. All I wanted was to be like her, but now it’s completely different. The few times we saw her was when she was judging our pictures, she never spoke to us in person. When the cameras stopped, it was as if she was an unknown person, Preston said.

In the interview, the model claimed that the participants were often forced to film 16-17 hours without water or food, and that they were put on hold for longer periods, which meant that the models were not allowed to eat, drink or talk before filming.

According to Preston, this could happen for hours, while members of the production team guarded the girls.

The former “Top Model” contestant also claimed that the production team on one occasion denied her medical treatment, when she had an anxiety and fatigue attack in one of her latest catwalk shows.

Instead, the production chose to film the event, so that the moment became a dramatic feature in the series.
