The US military has killed one of the leaders of the Islamic State (IS) terror group in Somalia. Bilal al-Sudani was killed along with ten other IS members during an operation in the north of the country.
US President Joe Biden had authorized the operation earlier this week, which took place on Wednesday. The troops hoped to capture Al-Sudani, but he did not survive the firefight that ensued when he was captured.
Al-Sudani was hidden in a cave complex in a mountainous area. From there he is said to have coordinated IS’s regional activities in Africa and beyond. He would also play a major role in financing the terrorist organization.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin says no civilians were injured in the operation. According to CNN one American soldier is believed to have suffered injuries after being bitten by a dog of his own army.
