Former Federal Minister Johan Van Overtveldt (N-VA) on Friday applauded the elimination by the United States of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad (Iraq), while former Defense Minister André Flahaut (PS) saw it as “total unconsciousness” on the part of US President Donald Trump.
The American attack on the influential Iranian general is an “excellent move” in the eyes of Mr. Van Overtveldt, now an MEP. “The other solution is to let a large part of the Middle East fall under the sphere of influence of a country of Islamist and anti-democratic fundamentalism. It was the least bad option,” he said.
In contrast, former Defense Minister André Flahaut (PS) criticized the American decision head-on. “Total unconsciousness” of Donald Trump in the Middle East, he tweeted. “The region of Iraq and Iran is already a powder keg, Trump has decided to set it on fire … once again! Unilateral adventurous strategy! Contempt for the civilian population! Contempt for peace! -t’en-guerre rejoice, “he lamented.
For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Defense, Philippe Goffin (MR), called on all actors in the field to exercise restraint, and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to de-escalate, as did several leaders of ‘Europe.
