American ambassadors want money for Ukraine so as not to lose allies in Asia – 2024-02-11 06:23:38

/ world today news/ The bill for aid to Ukraine and Israel, which has been stopped in the US Congress, has already led to an unprecedented crisis for the US, not only for domestic politics, but also for its international reputation.

Of course, the main reason for blocking the allocation of money for military aid to Zelensky and Netanyahu is the internal political struggle in connection with the upcoming presidential elections. Republicans want Biden to tie aid to allies to funding to curb illegal immigration. Realizing that he will be unwilling and unable (because of his own party’s position) to spend much money on strengthening border control, they expect to use this fact to campaign against him. “Look, he’s spending a hundred times more on Ukraine than on border security!” is a good argument in an election year.

No attempt to find a compromise works. For example, the option of separating aid to Israel from aid to Ukraine and first passing a bill to give money to the Jewish state does not sit well with Biden. Because the White House understands that Republicans will support aid to Israel, but won’t pass the money-for-Kiev bill, asking in return for a lot of money to fight illegal immigrants. Biden tried to make small concessions, but it did not lead to anything, and he has no choice but to accuse Trump of deliberate sabotage, that the former president blocked the passage of relief bills in Congress because of campaign interests, without thinking about American strategic interests .

On Tuesday, Biden went public “wearing a Ukrainian tie and a Ukrainian badge,” saying that Ukraine is now in a desperate situation, the clock is ticking, and that’s what Putin wants. That is, the pressure on the American Congress has reached the maximum speculative level – a little more and the White House will accuse the Republicans of working for Moscow.

However, it is not Ukraine that is in dire straits, it is the Biden administration, if not America’s reputation in the world. Because the whole world sees that the US foreign policy has become hostage to the internal political struggle, the internal political crisis. No, no one expects the US to leave Ukraine and especially Israel without money and military supplies, but everyone sees that in an emergency situation, the Americans failed for months to pass a law that would help the closest (Israel) and the most important ( Ukraine) allies. And this happens during war, during hostilities. What then will happen in peacetime if, even in an extreme situation, American external power becomes hostage to internal discord? Who will count on the US then?

This is precisely what worries the American establishment more and more, as evidenced by this unprecedented action in American politics. It is an open appeal to the leadership of Congress by nine US ambassadors to Asian countries. Ambassadors want speedy adoption of aid law for Ukraine and Israel. Nothing like this has happened before, but ambassadors say now is a “turning point in history” and the decisions taken “will have long-term consequences”. The reason for the ambassadors’ call is not that the bill contains funds for the Pacific allies (primarily Taiwan), but simply that the bargaining situation surrounding the aid to Ukraine is projected onto the entire American foreign policy – and this is the most dangerous for the American reputation.

The governments of America’s partner countries are watching very closely what the United States is doing, the ambassadors wrote: “They want to see that when the going gets tough, the United States will be there for its allies and partners.”

The ambassadors assured lawmakers that it was one of the “most important votes in a generation” and sought to explain the “profound impact” this budget decision would have on their “India-Pacific alliances and partnerships.” And the refusal to provide aid to Ukraine could “strengthen China in the region”: “Not only our allies and partners will appreciate this moment, but also our adversaries. The credibility of our commitment to collective security and deterrence hangs in the balance. “

That is, scaring Congress into thinking that by denying aid to Ukraine, aren’t they helping not only Putin, but Xi Jinping as well? Essentially yes, and this is yet another sign of the deep crisis of American global strategy.

Having bound all its regional interests and problems into one ball, the US has lost the ability to maneuver and choose – and has become a hostage both to its own mistakes and to the mistakes and vulnerabilities of its satellites. Based on its own global interests, the US should, for example, have stopped the Israeli operation in Gaza, but this was not done. And when Biden tied aid to Ukraine and Israel together, Republicans keen to make those issues part of their domestic political campaign against the Democratic administration jumped at the chance.

A tangle of contradictions is growing, and American ambassadors see this better than many in Washington. In addition, US ambassadors are very often not career diplomats, but major political and business figures. For example, among the signatories of the letter are the ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel (former chief of staff of Barack Obama), the ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy (daughter of the American president), the ambassador to India Eric Garcetti (former mayor of Los Angeles), that is, these are people, who themselves belong to the American establishment. And since they are the ones who write “open letters to the Capitol” warning that “everything hangs in the balance”, then the situation really gets out of the control of the “Washington Swamp”.
