American Airlines begins exclusive cargo operation in Puerto Rico

As part of American Airlines’ efforts during the coronavirus crisis (COVID-19), This week the airline began cargo-only operations between San Juan and Philadelphia. This new operation, which operates twice a week during the month of May, responds to the high demand around the world for pharmaceutical products produced in Puerto Rico.

American’s first cargo flight landed yesterday, May 7, at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) and He left in the afternoon for the Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) with more than 20,000 pounds of pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

Cargo flights will be operated with Boeing 787-800s, the first time the airline flies this aircraft in the Caribbean. They will take place on Thursdays and Sundays, offering 360,000 pounds of carrying capacity weekly between Puerto Rico and Philadelphia. Additionally, American continues its passenger operations, with 10 weekly flights between Miami International Airport (MIA) and SJU.

In March, the airline began operating its first cargo flights since 1984. In addition to this new operation in Puerto Rico, American is operating cargo flights to Amsterdam, Buenos Aires, Dublin, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, London, Madrid, Paris, Beijing, Rome, Shanghai, Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul and Zurich.
