The younger sister of Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in 2007, has spoken in public for the very first time. She did so at a vigil in memory of Maddie. Amelie McCann is now 18 years old, her missing sister would have turned 20 next week.
On Wednesday it was exactly sixteen years ago that Maddie McCann went missing. Her parents Kate and Gerry had taken the 3-year-old toddler to the bedroom with her younger brother and sister in their holiday flat in Praia da Luz in Portugal’s Algarve. When they returned, Maddie was gone. The twins Sean and Amelie – then 2 years old – were still in bed.
Sad event
Amelie was now being photographed publicly for the first time since she was a child. The twins have been kept completely out of the spotlight in recent years, but Amelie stepped forward anyway. With her long blond hair she gave an impression of what Maddie could have looked like today.
The girl and her parents attended a vigil for her missing sister in their hometown of Rothley, north of Leicester. She lit candles and also spoke to those present. Amelie called the anniversary of the disappearance “a sad event,” although she was pleased that everyone had come together for the memorial.
Maddie’s parents (both 55) did not speak. Twin brother Sean was not present.
Sporty
Amelie and Sean are in their final year at a school in Loughborough. They would according to the British tabloid Daily Mail be very sporty and participate in swimming championships and triathlons, among other things. The school kept a place for Maddie all those years, should she be found. Amelie would now look for a university to study next year.
The vigil came two weeks after a German court declared itself incompetent in a sexual assault case against the man who is the main suspect in Maddie’s disappearance case: German Christian Brückner (45). The case revolves around three charges of rape and two cases of child sexual abuse, all in Portugal between December 2000 and June 2017. The McCann case is not part of it.
The German police are convinced that Maddie is dead. She wants to charge prime suspect Christian Brückner with kidnapping and murder, but whether she can do so is unclear due to a legal-technical issue surrounding the jurisdiction of foreign courts.
Brückner insists he is innocent. He is currently in jail in Germany for the rape of an American tourist at the same resort in Portugal where Maddie disappeared 16 years ago.
