Alternatives to produce fertilizers within the circular economy

The general manager of Agricultural Productions and Markets, Esperanza Orellana, assured that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is committed to alternatives for the fertilizer production in the field of the circular economy, such as the use of animal by-products and waste for the manufacture of fertilizers in the face of the increase in the price of natural gas, which has led many ammonia production plants to consider stopping their production .

In this sense, it has been advanced that the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) will work with the fertilizer sector on a roadmap for look for alternatives in the production of these products, under the new regulation of fertilising products.

Esperanza Orellana spoke today at the end of the IV edition of the Congress on fertilization of Spanish Fertilizer Trade Association (ACEFER), where he ensured that the use of fertilizers is essential to maintain a level of agricultural production capable of guaranteeing a sufficient and affordable food supply.

Orellana explained that the new regulation of fertilizer products helps to be able to use digestate and reactors that use animal manure or municipal solid waste as the main raw material.

Likewise, it highlighted the possibility of rationalizing the use of fertilising products where possible without compromising production and food safety.

In this sense, the general manager highlighted that Spain was one of the first countries to put organic and organo-mineral fertilizers on the market, and a pioneer in the preparation of biostimulants and in the application of precision agriculture and fertigation techniques.

Finally, Esperanza Orellana recalled that the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR) is committed to this type of alternative through the support program for the application of the precision agriculture and 4.0 technologies in the agricultural and livestock sector.
