Alternate: chance of availability of RTX 3080 in first quarter ‘almost nil’ – Computer – News

Alternate warns customers that the availability of Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 GPUs will continue to deteriorate in the first quarter of 2021. The webshop reports, among other things, that the chance of RTX 3080 video cards during that period is ‘virtually nil’.

In particular, RTX 3080 and RTX 3060 Ti video cards will have to contend with extra low availability in the coming quarter, reports the webshop, which recently his expectations for this quarter. According to Alternate, the deteriorated availability is due to the poor availability of raw materials and Nvidia chips, coupled with the Chinese New Year, which has caused factories to be temporarily closed.

Alternate currently has ‘very many open customer orders’ for RTX 3080 video cards, but there is currently ‘very little supply’ of those GPUs. As a result, the chance of availability of that video card in the coming quarter is ‘virtually nil’. That certainly applies to new orders, Alternate reports. According to the webshop, there is also very little supply of the RTX 3060 Ti. As a result, the chance of availability of that GPU is also ‘very low’. Alternate does expect small deliveries of RTX 3090 and RTX 3070 video cards this quarter, of which ‘few’ orders are currently still open at the webshop.

The webshop claims to continue to deliver the orders in sequence. Alternate goes on to say that ‘the prices for new orders will increase even further in the coming period due to market forces’. In recent months, the prices of many Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 video cards have already risen sharply. This can be seen with all the different RTX 30 GPUs.

For example, data from the Hardware Info Price Comparison shows that the price of many RTX 3070 video cards now exceeds 800 euros. The average price among 30 different RTX 3070 GPUs is currently 870 euros, with an average of 899 euros. To illustrate: the RTX 3070 Founders Edition from Nvidia has a suggested retail price of 519 euros. The average price among 33 different RTX 3080 GPUs currently stands at EUR 1101 with an average of EUR 1099. The RTX 3080 Founders Edition suggested retail price is 719 euros.

The poor availability of GeForce RTX 30 video cards has been around for months. The RTX 3080 came out in September and was Sold out almost immediately after release. The cards are still difficult to obtain. The GPUs that are available are sold for high prices. Other GPUs in the RTX 30 series are also difficult to find and have to contend with increased prices.

Nvidia has last year have been apologized for the delivery problems and reported in November that the shortages until 2021 can persist. The GPU manufacturer then called ‘capacity problems’ in the hardware sector one of the reasons for the poor availability. Nvidia will release its RTX 3060 video cards later this month. The availability of these GPUs remains to be seen.

AMD is also struggling with limited availability of its Radeon RX 6000 video cards. The first GPUs in that series appeared in November, and were Sold out almost immediately after release. A week later, the modified RX 6000 variants appeared, which too were virtually unobtainable. The Ryzen 5000 CPUs were also sold out quickly upon release. The Ryzen 5 5600X and Ryzen 7 5800X are now better available, but the Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X remain limited.

AMD reported earlier this year that the shortages of its chips are expected to persist ‘until mid-2021’. It refers to its chips for the PC and gaming markets. AMD also manufactures the chips used in the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.
