Already five cancellations for unofficial World Cup badminton national teams

Five countries have already opted out for the Thomas and Uber Cup in Aarhus, Denmark. The tournament is considered an unofficial World Cup badminton for national teams. Top country Indonesia is the last to refrain from participating in the tournament, which will be held from 3 to 11 October for fear of the corona virus. South Korea, Australia, Taiwan and Thailand had already withdrawn, the international badminton federation BWF reported.

Indonesia, multiple winner, was in the men’s tournament (Thomas Cup) divided into a group with the Netherlands. National coach Ruud Bosch announced his eight-man selection earlier this week. The Dutch team consists of Mark Caljouw, Joran Kweekel, Finn Achthoven, Robin Tabeling, Ruben Jille, Ties van der Lecq, Wessel van der Aar and Brian Wassink. The Netherlands is not represented in the women’s tournament (Uber Cup).

The Thomas and Uber Cup was initially scheduled to be played in May, was first moved to August and finally scheduled for October. “The coronavirus outbreak is not yet under control in Indonesia as well as in other countries. The situation is worrying the players,” said a spokesperson for the Indonesian team.
