The men’s Japan trip was therefore limited to just one race. Already on Saturday, spring-like conditions and strong wind in giant slalom did not guarantee fair conditions.
In the night to Sunday the weather changed. If there were temperatures in the double-digit plus range during the giant slalom, it cooled the day after in heavy snow by around ten degrees.
Wind up to 80 km / h
The bigger problem was the gusty, turning wind. Initially scheduled for 10:00 a.m. local time (2:00 a.m.CET), it was hoped that the race would start just under two hours later. Ultimately, however, had to be postponed by half an hour and finally canceled.
Race director Markus Waldner explained: “The weather is so unstable that we cannot start the race in this way. We have gusts of wind of up to 80 kilometers per hour, which means that the slopes are full of snow again. ”
Supplement maybe in Kranjska Gora
In the Slalom World Cup, there are normally only two races on the program, in mid-March in Kranjska Gora and a week later at the season finale in Cortina d’Ampezzo. The only theoretical possibility to add the Japan race would be on the Kranjska Gora weekend.
