The course set by ÖSV coach Roland Assinger turned out to be too rotating for a large number of his runners, especially in the upper part, which for most Austrians was already a big gap after a few seconds. The best ÖSV lady was Stephanie Venier in eighth place (+1.25). Her teammates Nina Ortlieb (+1.27) and Anna Veith (+1.35) followed immediately behind.
Viktoria Rebensburg also had big problems. The German, who had won her only win of the season in the Super-G in Lake Louise, had to be satisfied with twelfth place, 1.73 seconds behind. The chilled Nicole Schmidhofer was 13th (+1.84), Michaela Haider 14th (+1.85). Ramona Siebenhofer (18./+2.55) and Mirjam Puchner (26./+3.18) landed in the field. Tamara Tippler and Elisabeth Reisinger left in the upper part.
“Perfect course setting” for Shiffrin
Shiffrin also benefited from a failure. Federica Brignone, who finished second on the descents twice, did a head-to-head race with the American and was 0.08 seconds ahead in the last split. Afterwards, the Italian fell and lost her chances of victory. “Federica’s run looked really fast. Your failure was happy for me and unfortunate for her, ”said Shiffrin.
The 66-time World Cup winner also emphasized that the run was almost tailor-made for her. “For me, the conditions and the course setting were perfect. I took it very aggressively, it was a crazy run, ”said Shiffrin, who expanded her lead in the overall World Cup with her sixth win of the season and also took the lead in the Super G World Cup, in an ORF interview.
Venier and Veith with different problems
Venier and Veith, however, handled the course differently. While the Tyrolean had her problems upstairs, Veith was not satisfied with her lower part. “The upper part was quite good and a step forward. At the bottom I was far too high from the line and didn’t pull through. I still have a lot of opportunities to go faster, ”said Veith, who was the last runner to win the Super G in Bansko in 2015.
While Venier also struggled a little with lack of self-confidence, her physical condition did not allow for better placement for Schmidhofer. “I simply have no strength,” said the Styrian immediately after her run at the finish. “I didn’t even manage to let the ski go downstairs.
