“Alma is an unexpected child of love…” Pauls ķesteris on the role of a father and why the relationship with his daughter’s mother broke up

As it turns out, Kesteris and his daughter’s mother, Madara Ramani, have not been living together for more than a year. He emphasizes that Madara is a wonderful mother, but that the two are too different for life together.

“We met, we fell in love, and Alma is an unexpected love child. But also a very welcome one, because I had been thinking about a child for several years. (..) Madara and I are too different for life together, but we both love Alma very much. It’s another the aspect of growing up, when you put your ego aside,” reveals ķesteris.

“My daughter lives alternately with me and her mother – I am twice a month single parent. How to say it in Latvian? Single dad? That’s not how I feel, I’m not lonely!” said the director, adding that he is not in a new relationship.

“I look at Alma, and I think she doesn’t miss anything. She has both mom and dad, and she feels good. Maybe she will miss her with time? I don’t know what it’s like to grow up with divorced parents. My mom helps a lot when raising my daughter. Alma, of course, also likes her grandfather very much. The girls like Girts Kesteris!” laughs Kesteris.

When talking about the role of the father, ķesteris says that he nurtures understanding and sensitivity in himself, because the daughter is very expressive and artistic. Both like to play music and other creative activities together – going to the theater, museum. “The fact that I can do it together with my daughter makes me very happy – because I can share and discover something new myself,” the director reveals in the interview.
