Alliance promotes education with one million euros

Class 2000 is the name of a teaching program for health promotion and violence and addiction prevention in primary schools. It was introduced in Mannheim in 2003, and an important milestone has now been reached: One million euros have been invested in Mannheim to date. This was made possible by an alliance of the five Mannheim Lions Clubs, the city, the education authority, the Mannheim schools and many sponsors.

“An African saying goes that it takes an entire village to raise a child. In Mannheim, the whole city is involved in helping our children grow up healthily, ”said Peter Marysko, Class 2000 representative of the Mannheim Lions. “We can look back on more than 15 years of reliable, continuous and sustainable cooperation between the Lions, the state education authority and the city of Mannheim with Class 2000”, added Mayor Peter Kurz. The city supports the participation of schools in class 2000 with an annual amount of 20,000 euros. The five Mannheim Lions clubs used their networks and were able to inspire many other supporters and sponsors, so that the program can be continued in the future.

In the 2019/20 school year, 30 primary schools and special needs education and counseling centers with 304 classes and over 7000 children took part in Mannheim. There are currently 15 class 2000 health promoters working as freelance workers to get the children excited about new topics in special hours. They impart life and health skills as well as a positive attitude towards health. The topics range from nutrition, exercise and relaxation to non-violent conflict resolution.
