I.In the fight against the corona pandemic, the international pharmaceutical industry wants to “set an example”, as David Ricks, CEO of the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and president of the international association of pharmaceutical manufacturers IFPMA (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations) said during a digital press conference. He spoke to leading managers from Roche, Sanofi-Pasteur, Johnson & Johnson and Takeda. “We live in unprecedented times that are turning society upside down,” said Ricks. The pharmaceutical industry has achieved a great deal in the past two months. “We work in a team,” said Ricks, referring not only to the various players in the pharmaceutical industry and scientists, but also to regulatory authorities, who worked particularly quickly and supportively with the companies. The association currently has almost 80 clinical studies for new treatment methods and vaccinations against the coronavirus and related viruses such as Sars or Mers.

Many of the drugs are already on the market for other diseases or at least in advanced testing. The hope is therefore that some of them may also be suitable for the coronavirus affecting the lungs. The drugs fall into different categories: So-called viraticatics are designed to prevent the virus from multiplying or from entering the lung cells. Such drugs were originally developed for HIV, Ebola or hepatitis C. There are also certain lung medications that are currently being tested. In addition, so-called immune modulators are tested, which are supposed to prevent serious immune reactions of the own body.
