Aline Danioth’s tears: “There is a lot of darkness in me”

A few weeks ago she was still beaming at the World Ski Championships in Courchevel and Méribel. Now Aline Danioth is going through an extremely difficult time. The Swiss has torn her cruciate ligament for the fourth time.

She is cheerful and extremely popular with teammates and opponents. So it comes as no surprise that she has received a lot of support for her social media post sharing the sad news. From Tina Maze to Corinne Suter to Roger Federer: They all give the 24-year-old from Andermatt a lot of strength. She tore her cruciate ligament for the fourth time on Sunday at the European Cup in Gällivare (Sweden). In 2016 and 2020 she was injured in Sestriere, and in the same year she fell during training.

She shared all her frustration on social media on Tuesday: “It feels like a nightmare,” Danioth begins her message: “Skiing is my one and only, it always has been. Of course it’s not always easy, the sport can be tough. But every morning when my alarm goes off and I realize it’s a training day, I smile and feel so grateful and happy to hit the slopes and work on my dream,” she writes.

On the way to the top of the world

The injuries would have made her appreciate this life even more. But now she finds it difficult to accept this new setback. “My focus now is on my health: physical and mental. There’s a lot of darkness in me, but I hope that sooner or later I’ll find some light again,” she concludes.

The injury is doubly bitter: Danioth had shown at the World Ski Championships in France with 6th place in the slalom that she skis better than ever before. Instead of attacking the podium in the last World Cup races of the season, the next long rehab now begins. “This thing (the cruciate ligament, editor’s note) doesn’t know who it’s messing with,” is AJ Ginnis’ apt conclusion.
