Alert, COVID-19 Severe Symptoms Can Trigger Cognitive Disorders

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explains that cognitive impairment is when a person has difficulty remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect their daily life.

Recently, research revealed that severe COVID-19 results in cognitive impairment equivalent to a loss of 10 IQ points.

This disorder can still be detected more than six months after experiencing acute illness due to COVID infection. Meanwhile, the recovery is gradual.

Related evidence COVID-19 can cause long-lasting cognitive and mental health problems are increasingly being discovered.

Former COVID patients report a range of symptoms including fatigue, “brain fog”, problems remembering words, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) several months afterward.

A UK study found that about one in seven people surveyed reported having symptoms that included cognitive difficulties 12 weeks after testing positive for COVID-19.

And a recent brain imaging study found that even mild COVID-19 can cause the brain to shrink. Only 15 of the 401 people in the study were hospitalized.

Incidental findings from a major citizen science project (The Great British Intelligence Test) also showed that mild cases can cause cognitive symptoms persistent. However, this problem becomes more apparent the more severe the symptoms are.
